Some books worth reading...

Kris had asked for a list of books worth reading, and there's just WAAAY too many to remember.  But here's a beginning with some of my favourites, and others, with no attempt at putting them in a vague sense of categories.  (They're just broken into fiction / non-fiction.  Sort yourselves LOL)

Fiction

C.S. Lewis -- Complete Chronicles of Narnia

These 7 books are wonderfully imaginative, even if they're old now.  They follow the Pevensie children and others into the land of Narnia, and introduce Aslan the Lion, the animals that talk, Reepicheep... and incidental life lessons :)  The Magician's Nephew, The Lion, the Witch, and the Wardrobe, The Horse and His Boy, Prince Caspian, The Voyage of the Dawn Treader, The Silver Chair, and The Last Battle

Roald Dahl --  Charlie and the Chocolate Factory

Charlie Bucket lived with his parents and grandparents in a tiny, ramshackle hut at the edge of town.  They were desperately poor, and once a year, on his birthday, he got a bar of chocolate -- a WONKA chocolate.  Then, one day, he got a chance to visit Willy Wonka's amazing chocolate factory, and see the Oompa-Loompas and all the thrilling things that are in a chocolate factory!

Roald Dahl -- The Witches

The Grand High Witch has a plan to get rid of all the children in England.  First, all the witches will take over the sweet shops, then they will sell poisoned sweets that will turn all the children into mice!  Will they succeed?

Actually, let's just go ahead and list Roald Dahl's books here, shall we?  It's a lot simpler.. he's got quite a few.  There's other fun ones like Matilda, James and the Giant Peach, Fantastic Mr. Fox, The BFG, The Twits...

J.R.R. Tolkien -- The Hobbit

A story of high adventure -- treasure hunting with dwarves and battling dragons!  Wizards!  Magic!  Giant spiders!  Into this is thrown Bilbo Baggins, a hobbit who prefers to be at home, safe before his fire with a good meal.

J.K. Rowling -- Harry Potter

The story of "the boy who lived!" and his friends as they go to school in the amazing Hogwarts.  Learning to be wizards isn't all about waving wands and Quiddich!  There's pranks and giant spiders and dragons, oh... and battles against You Know Who.

J.R.R. Tolkien -- Lord of the Rings

My absolute favourite series.  Classic tale about the quest to destroy the One Ring, the fellowship that was created for that, the battle for Middle Earth and everything that went along.

Frank Herbert -- Dune

Political intrigue on a galactic scale.  Control of the spice leads to the assassination of Duke Leto Atreides, and thus to the rise of Maud'dib... the planet Arrakis is at the centre of it all.  This is the one that started it all, and (IMO) the best.

Isaac Asimov

It's hard to choose a single book by Asimov.  My favourite story by him has always been "Bicentennial Man" and I stopped liking Robin Williams after the movie was released.  It also took a while after that before I could read another Asimov... especially when the movie "I, Robot" came out.  If ever there's something on "Nightfall," I'll just pretend it doesn't exist.  BAD movies!  I also really like his "Black Widowers" series, and the "Azazel" character!

Arthur C. Clarke

2001: A Space OdysseyRendezvous with RamaChildhood's End.  Time's Eye.  Then we get to his short stories, including "The Sentinel" and "The Nine Billion Names of God" among others.  I think he's the best science story writer, and he's credited with multiple ideas (satellites, for one) along with influencing many movies.  (A Clockwork Orange, Independence Day, 2001...)

Some other noteworthy sci-fi and fantasy authors include:

Robert Jordan (Conan series; Wheel of Time series); Frederik Pohl; Larry Niven (Ringworld series); Anne McCaffrey (series: Pern / Dragonriders; Crystal singer; Singing City; Freedom; Acorna)

I'll add more soon... I need a pause :)
