Day 2

This is what is looked like at 7am today.  That’s just demonic.  Still dark, no sign of “rosy-fingered dawn” or even “the first blush of dawn,” definitely not “bright” but early!  But we had an appointment at 7:30, which is why we were out in the midnight mirk!  Jerry rode on my lap in both directions, and complained when we got home and I went back to sleep — and locked him out of the bedroom so I could rest.  Then when my support worker arrived, he was leaping on her, to the point that he started to cry when she left.  I’m pretending to sulk at him for that, not very effectively.  He just ignores me and nibbles on my elbow.  Don also caught up on some sleep after I dragged him out as the driver.  When we woke up after noon, I had enough energy to cook some chicken and rice, which will make several days’ meals.  I’m very proud that I had that burst of energy, so at least there’s stuff in the fridge for a bit.

We just had a fun family video chat while my baby niece cut her birthday cake and blew out the candles.  She’s enjoying her birthday; Auntie hasn’t mailed her gift yet, but it will arrive by Monday which just prolongs the fun a bit.  It’s pathetic, especially when you consider that I’ve had her gift since before Christmas, but I held off on mailing it in part because I had considered being there for her big day.  When I realized that wasn’t happening, I just delayed, partly due to the weather, and now I’m late.  😔

The hockey game is starting… I have ZERO interest in it, but after <mumble> years, I understand enough of it to make sense of it, and I can recognize many of the players — some more than others, and mostly those who play with the Eastern teams.  So I know the starting rites and am familiar with the commentators.  I do not, never have, and am at a loss to explain a couple of things.  Why is the national anthem played at every game?  In my view, at least, they are commercial events, not something at which you’d sing a national anthem.  Same question applies to other sports, like car racing (stock cars); basketball; “football”, etc.  It makes sense when playing the FIFA World Cup, or CONCACAF; it would also make sense with international cricket, but I don’t remember those games starting with national anthems.    Why is it the “National” Hockey League, when there are 2 countries in it?  That’s a very different approach from baseball’s “World Series” which just has ONE country competing— not really global!  These are the questions that I ask during the commercials, and at this point, Don just ignores me because he says I’m just being difficult!

I’m done with hockey… I’m going to scour the internet to see if I can find my nutritional supplements.  They’re in short supply, and very backordered, so I haven’t been able to get any for a couple of months.  I think I mentioned this before; my dietician gave me a sample of a possible substitute which I tried today.  It had the effect of galvanizing me to cook today, as it was so cloyingly sweet that I could barely swallow a mouthful.  She assures me that it’s more palatable if I dilute it with milk, but I’m not sure that I want to spoil milk that way… My usual supply isn’t available anywhere — in stores, there are empty shelves where it should be! — and Amazon is suggesting a price that’s FIVE TIMES what I normally pay.  That’s a hard “No!”  Amusingly, one store says that it’s out of stock and suggests an alternate — a wireless router.  Their inventory software clearly has a few gaps!  I’m off to see if anything is available tonight, and then play with the dog.  Tomorrow’s appointment is also early, so another early night tonight.  Good night!
